Great atmosphere. Good Cuban food. Love the music and people, too bad they don't have a liquor license.
i LOVE Cuban Pete's - one of my most favorite places to eat!.
Sometimes I truly wonder about the negative reviews I read here ... they're so vicious, I wonder if A. They are written by competitors trying to discredit the competition or B. Just a bunch of miserable people out there.
Cuban Pete's is a total joy - from the decor, the service and the food. I've loved everything I've ever ordered there and have taken friends who also were quite happy with their orders. My favorite things are the melon mojitos and the tapas ... we especially like to order the meatballs and the dates wrapped in bacon, yum.
If this place is so "HORRIBLE" why is it always packed to the gills! That is the only drawback but eating early can help avoid the lines.
In this economy, when restaurants are closing right and left, Cuban Pete's is EXPANDING to accomodate the throngs of people who come to have a total cultural experience. You really do feel transported to Havana!
Excellent food, ambiance and decor. Nor to be missed!.
Cuban Pete's is without doubt my favorite restaurant in Montclair. Food is consistently great and the decor and ambience transport you to Havana back in 50s. During summer the patio is open and is great.
The only recommendation I have is to get there early since because of its popularity it gets crowded during dinner time and wait time can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. All well worth, but I know better and prefer to have an early (or late) lunch or dinner. At times service might not be at its best when is so crowded.
Here are my favorites:

The worst experience in a restaurant thus far!.
I was a server for 4 years and i usually tend to understand when there are a few mistakes here and there, but this place was horrible on every aspect imaginable!!!
To begin, it was superbly unorganized there was food going in front of people left and right which is by the way, anti hygienic and dangerous , since any child can be walking around and have a hot plate fall on them. The trash was being carried out in the front lobby where all the food was passing and where everyone was piled up on the stairs. They have extreme safety hazards by having people pile up along the stairs, and when others are trying to exit the building they cannot hold on to the side rails to hold themselves!!! I even saw a son holding his mother by the back so she would not fall! ridiculous!!!!
We finally sat down and it took the server about a good 15 minutes to get to our table. When the server got there he tells us they ran out of about 50% of their products, which was quite mind boggling. Nonetheless we decided to stay because we had waited long enough and decided it was not worth going elsewhere, we were way wrong!
The food finally arrived and none of the food was what we had ordered. Then the server comes and tells us that they ran out of more things and that was the reason why our plates didn't come as we had asked. Need i remind you i was a server before? The servers duty is to inform the customer that something is out as soon as it is out! not wait until the food is coming out and just throw anything on their plate and expect them to want that!!!! are you kidding me?!!!
The food was alright, but quite honestly after all the events my appetite was the least of my problems, and considering the prices they have on these plates it is so not worth your buck.
The cherry on top was the ending of our evening.... both the manager and the owner are the most incompetent business personnel i have every come across! No wonder the servers are how they are! They are rude, they have an attitude and quite honestly they have no clue how to manage a business!!!!
Terrible Customer Service.
My review is fair and realistic. I am not a kid and I am very serious about my dining experience. About a week ago, I might have given them 4 stars, because the food is pretty good and the service is ok. A little noisy for my taste, but fine, I am not a old man who can't stand some loud music, but here is the problem.
We went out yesterday to celebrate my wife's birthday. I can understand that they don't take reservations and I knew that, but when most of the party was already in and waiting to suprise my wife, they were not allowed to sit unless we were there. Not to mention they were treated rude and unfair. When I arived, I approached the manager who had a extremely nasty tone for no apparent reason and he refused, I repeat refused to give us a table. Basically we were told to leave. For what? There was no problem up to that point and there was no attitude from our side. The only attitude I noticed is from the girl at the front desk and the manager. When I asked him if the owners knew how he manages the place, telling a party of 20 to leave. His reply was 'I don't care, you have to leave now!!'. I have never been treated like that in my life. That only tells me one thing, the place doesn't care about their customers. You will not want to waste your time hoping that the management might be in the good mood. You do not want to bring your friends and family only to embarass yourself and hope that someone, like a manager will do you a favor. This is not some kid that causes problems. We are all professional adults with the families, kids, good careers and it was uncalled for.
Now, while we started telling this unfortunate experience to some people, we realize that it is not an isolated incident and strongly advice for people not to go Cuban Pete's. Do not punish yourself and your party. Find a place that cares about you and your money. You will not be sorry you read this. It will ensure you avoid the same rudeness that we had to encounter last tonight.
Went there for lunch. The ambience was delightful and relaxing. The food was excellent and the mojitos were just right.
I highly recomend Cuban Pete's and I'll be returning this week.
Don't Listen to the last review. I went here two times so far for lunch and thought everything was great. All of the employees were professional, friendly and patient. We were seated immediately. They do not try to rush you at all. They space out the time between appetizers and your meal perfectly. They have huge portions and the food is excellent. The place is absolutely beautiful. Its a fun and friendly atmosphere. I can't wait to go again.
Terrible customer service from the owner of establishment...very arrogant, not accommodating at all. I just went to Cuban Pete's for my birthday, I had been there before for my birthday and on that occasion the service was not that great, but decided to give it one more try. When we got there on a Tuesday (least busy day) I inquired to getting two separate bills, since the prior experience (got one bill) was difficult. The server didn't answer my question and went to ask the "so call boss" who told me that he was not going to give us 2 separate bills since his policy was to put everything on one bill. I ask him why not, and he told me in an arrogant manner "because he was the boss and he didn't feel like it" at which I replied; that next time I would not go there for dinner...to which he replied "he didn't care since he has a lot of customers. Some of the people in our party did not like the food...said it was too salty...and the beans didn't have any taste at all...and the chicken dish was slightly burnt. They don't give you any paper napkins, they put all the knives and forks into a water pitcher...and the only thing good about this trip was the service we received from the Peruvian server...if it wasn't for his service and the fact that we were already seated, I would have left and not had dinner there. I will not be visiting this establishment again.
